In the summer of 2014, I became inspired to create caricature versions of recognizable pop-culture influencers and political candidates as a means to help millennial audiences better engage with and understand the news beyond traditional digital mechanisms.

I carefully crafted vector illustrations designed to be simplistic enough to maintain fidelity and accuracy when scaled to various sizes, large and small. (These illustrations are shown only at 120%.)

The Obama illustrations were used to help our readers quickly determine his sentiments during the 2015 State of the Union.

The full batch of caricatures are used throughout The Fix's blog to connect with its audience using satirical emoji-like heads to convey the 2016 Presidential candidates for both Democratic and Republican parties.

Using these illustrations, Philip Bump and I created The Washington Post's version of Guess Who: The 2016 Candidates Edition. This project afforded users an engaging way of staying informed about the ever-growing list of declared candidates.

These primitive illustrations then lent themselves to many additional evolutions and separate projects, including Floppy Candidate.
